Mickey S has lived his entire life in the suburbs of Northern New Jersey where most of his stories take place. All through school and well into his adult life, he found writing to be a chore, something to be avoided at all costs. A lifelong gay activist, his only experiences with writing as an adult were occasional articles in his local gay organization's newsletter, in which the editor accused him of trying to put people to sleep.
He stumbled into writing erotic romance by accident. In his early days on the Internet, he made a friend, a married bisexual with very limited gay experience, who wanted to hear what it was like to be gay. So Mickey wrote him long emails, detailing some of his life experiences. These were non-fiction but somewhat fantasized. A few years later, Mickey discovered the Nifty website and began devouring the stories there. After a while, he began to feel guilty about taking from the site and not giving back anything beyond the occasional email of praise to an author. He remembered those old emails which he had saved, not being technologically astute enough to delete them.
He reworked a couple of those emails that dealt with coming out and posted them under another, even more anonymous name, thinking that others might identify with something in them. The only responses he got were to the sex scenes, so he pandered to his audience and rewrote the other emails, emphasizing the sex. In just a few months, in what he refers to now as his literary exhibitionist period, he posted several idealized and fantasized sexual anecdotes from his life. As he tired of this he began a correspondence with another Nifty writer, Tim Mead. Tim encouraged him in his writing, urging him to try fiction. He was convinced that there was a flaw in his gay gene and he wasn't creative enough, but eventually Tim wore him down and he gave it a shot. He started with a bit of reality, added some fantasy and in no time was hooked on creating stories.
Still waiting for Mr. Right to come along, Mickey divides his free time between writing, gay activism and bowling. While these three endeavors don't seem to have much in common, they do each require one trait -- hopeless idealism. (If you ever saw him bowl, you'd understand the hopeless part.)
